Private vs Group Swim Lessons: Which Is Right for Your Child?
by Göksel Yavuz
There's no single right answer
After 16 years teaching both formats in Bodrum, I can tell you: each has clear pros and cons. The right choice depends on your child, your budget, and your timeline.
Private lessons: when they win
Water-fearful children
If your child is scared of water, group lessons often make it worse. Peer eyes create pressure. A private lesson gives 100% attention — and trust builds faster.
Fast progress needed
Going on a holiday and want maximum progress in 5 lessons? Private. Every minute is yours.
Special needs or gentle pace
If your child learns differently, a group environment might frustrate them. Private lessons adapt to their exact pace.
Siblings together
This is our most popular Premium option. Siblings can share a 40-minute 1-on-2 session — cost-effective and bonding.
Group lessons: when they win
Socially confident children
Some kids thrive with others. They push each other, learn by watching peers, and make friends.
Tight budget
Group lessons are significantly cheaper per child. If finances are tight, group is better than no lessons.
Already water-confident
If your child is comfortable and just needs technique, group works well.
Holiday atmosphere
A small group (3 kids max) in a villa pool can feel like a party, not a lesson.
Our package breakdown
At 2kol1nefes, we offer three formats:
- Starter (€68): Small group up to 3 children, 30-40 min
- Premium (€90): 1-on-1 or siblings only, 30-40 min
- VIP (€135): 1-on-1 at your villa/yacht pool, includes photos
The real cost comparison
Say your child needs 16 lessons to swim independently.
- Group: €68 × 16 = €1,088
- Private: €90 × 12 = €1,080 (private progresses ~25% faster — see how long it takes to learn swimming for typical timelines)
Often the math evens out — you pay more per lesson but need fewer lessons.
What about online videos?
Honest answer: watching videos can help you understand technique, but no video replaces a qualified instructor in the water with your child. Especially for safety.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from group to private mid-program?
Yes, we adjust based on how your child is progressing.
What if my child doesn't like the group?
First lesson: we move them to private at the group price, no extra charge.
Are group lessons safer?
Not really. We maintain 1 instructor per 3 children maximum. Private is 1-on-1, so technically safer.
Do siblings count as a group?
For our Premium package, we treat siblings as a 'private' pair — full instructor attention, shared pricing.
How small is 'small group'?
Maximum 3 children per instructor at Starter. We don't do large classes.
