10 Pool Safety Rules Every Parent Must Know
by Göksel Yavuz
Why pool safety is non-negotiable
In 16 years of teaching children to swim in Bodrum, I've seen one truth repeat itself: accidents happen fastest around calm, beautiful water. A villa pool looks safe. A hotel kids' pool looks supervised. But drowning is silent, and it takes seconds.
These are the 10 rules I teach every parent on the first day of lessons.
1. Eyes on the water, always
Phones away. Books closed. One designated adult whose only job is watching the children in the water. Rotate every 15 minutes so no one gets tired.
2. Arm's reach for non-swimmers
If your child cannot swim independently, stay within arm's reach in the water with them. Not on the deck. Not with a drink. In the water.
3. No running on wet tiles
Pool decks are the #1 injury spot — not the pool itself. Teach the rule early and enforce it every single time.
4. Floaties are not life jackets
Arm bands and inflatables give children false confidence. They can deflate, slip, or flip a child face-down. Use Coast Guard approved life vests if flotation is needed.
5. Learn CPR
Every parent of a child near water should know infant and child CPR. It's a 2-hour course that can save your child's life.
6. Fence the pool when not in use
In Bodrum, many villas have removable fences or covers. Use them. A 4-sided fence reduces drowning risk by 83%.
7. Clear the deck of distractions
Toys lure children back to the pool after the swim session ends. Pick them up. Remove the temptation.
8. Teach 'stop' and 'come here' before any stroke
These two commands save lives. Before we teach freestyle, we teach obedience in the water.
9. Never swim alone
Even strong swimmers. Even adults. The buddy system exists for a reason.
10. Know the signs of drowning
Real drowning is silent. No splashing, no shouting. Just a child with their head tilted back, mouth at water level, eyes glassy. If you see it, act immediately.
Frequently asked questions
At what age can my child swim unsupervised?
No child should swim completely unsupervised until at least age 10, and even then with a buddy. Competence in calm water does not equal competence in all conditions.
Are hotel pools safer than villa pools?
Hotel pools usually have lifeguards, but lifeguards are not babysitters. Your vigilance is still required.
My child had lessons. Why do they still need supervision?
Lessons teach skill, not judgment. Children can have 50 lessons and still make an impulsive decision. Supervision is the safety net.
What should I do if my child panics in water?
Stay calm. Get to them, support under the armpits, lift their head. Do not let them climb you — turn them to face away. Get them out and warm.
Do you teach safety in your lessons? Also read our guide on overcoming fear of water.
Yes. Every lesson starts and ends with safety — pool entry, exit, depth awareness, and what to do if a friend is in trouble.
