Bodrum's Best Family Beaches with Calm, Shallow Water

by Göksel Yavuz

The Bodrum peninsula is perfect for kids

Bodrum's many coves mean there's almost always a sheltered beach — no matter which direction the wind is blowing. After 16 years living and teaching here, these are the beaches I send families to.

1. Bitez Beach

A long, shallow bay on the south coast. Water stays waist-high for 30+ meters out — perfect for non-swimmers and toddlers. Family-friendly cafes and shade trees along the shore.

Best for: First-time swimmers, picnics, half-day visits
Watch out for: Crowds in peak July/August

2. Yalıkavak public beach

The main beach in Yalıkavak offers calm, clean water and lifeguards in season. The beach itself has fine sand/pebble mix that's gentle on little feet.

Best for: Reliable safety, amenities
Watch out for: Can get crowded, paid loungers

3. Türkbükü (Göltürkbükü) inlet

A natural cove with extremely calm water. Popular with families because it's sheltered on all sides. Many beach clubs have swim areas roped off.

Best for: Days when everything else is too windy
Watch out for: Expensive beach clubs; try the free public access points

4. Gümbet

Touristy but perfect for families. Gentle slope into water, lots of watersports, and easy access to food/drinks.

Best for: Full-day family outings with amenities
Watch out for: Party atmosphere evenings

5. Ortakent (Yahşi) beach

A long stretch of beach with multiple access points. Less crowded than central Bodrum and water stays shallow for a while.

Best for: Quiet family days
Watch out for: Fewer lifeguards — stay alert

6. Bağla Beach

A hidden gem on the west side. Calm, clean, less crowded. Requires a bit of a drive but worth it.

Best for: Escape from crowds
Watch out for: Limited shade, bring umbrellas

Safety tips for all beaches

  • Always stay within arm's reach of non-swimming children
  • Check wind direction — beaches change dramatically with wind
  • Bring shade and water; Bodrum sun is strong even at 10 AM
  • Don't rely on inflatables alone; they drift fast in any current
  • Teach children to always look at an adult before entering water

Where we teach swimming

At 2kol1nefes, we teach in controlled environments — villa and hotel pools, not the sea. Once your child swims confidently, then we recommend sea experience. Ocean swimming is a different skill that requires pool mastery first.

Frequently asked questions

Is the sea safe for beginners?

Only in shallow, calm, sheltered coves with constant supervision. We recommend starting in a pool. Check our pool safety rules before your first session.

Are Bodrum beaches safe for babies?

Calm beaches like Bitez or Türkbükü inlet are fine for supervised play. Always shade them and watch for sudden drops.

Do any beaches have lifeguards?

Public beaches in central Bodrum, Gümbet, and Yalıkavak have lifeguards in peak season (June-September).

When is the sea warmest?

July and August. June is comfortable; May and September are cool for children.
